Sports Luxe Or All That Shimmers? We Bring You The Spring 2013 Trends To Try Now

Dress hyper-girly or be dark and dangerous. Try monochrome or full-on colour. Channel the east or the ’60s. There are lots of directions you can go this spring and in this week's issue of Grazia, fashion director Susannah Frankel takes you through the options. From fondant colours, fragile lace, silk ribbons and bows on the one hand to the wicked woman of Helmut Newton’s world on the other and luxe sportswear hovering somewhere in between, it's time to discover what the Spring Summer 2013 catwalks are made of...

1. Sports Luxe

It’s fashionable to be fit. Or at least for your clothes to make you look as though you are. Everything from bodyconscious T-shirts and leggings to luxe sweatshirts and string-vest dresses apply.

2. All That Shimmers

Sparkle merrily through the spring in jewel-coloured sequins and opalescent fabrics – from leather to lace. The most fashionable shades are inspired by the ocean waves. Cool.

3. Asian Tales

Obi sashes, kimono sleeves, origami pleats and folds and embroideries that whisper of more exotic continents all make an appearance. Be literal or lateral – the choice is yours.

4. Sheer

The new way to wear sheer is stripped back and patchworked into a graphic silhouette. There’s nothing blousy about this particular look. Think Helmut Lang in the early 1990s. Sigh.

5. Sugar

Frills, flounces, ribbons and bows decorate a sweet silhouette that wouldn’t look out of place in a doll’s house. Be aware, though, that with sheer panels and flashes of flesh, sometimes it’s nice to be naughty.

6. Monochrome

Stripes, geometry, checks, zigzags; long and lean or short and sharp… Just so long as the (non)colours involved are black and white, fashion points will be scored.

7. Tribes

There’s a prevailing love affair with antifashion in all its guises. The spirit of punk is alive and kicking with a grungey aesthetic and a nod to rave culture. Street fashion is having a moment – and that’s always a good thing.
